Heads up: Water Quality is in early access. Expect changes and new features as we continue to improve the module.

Overview

When setting up the water quality module, misconfigurations in rulesets, subrules, or checklist assignments can cause unexpected behavior. This guide covers the most common issues and how to fix them.

Common setup issues and solutions

Checklist shows no water quality parameters

  • Cause: The Water Quality Question isn’t linked to a ruleset.

  • Fix: Edit the checklist and select a ruleset when configuring the Water Quality Question.

Warning: Without a ruleset selected, no validation can occur and staff won’t see parameter fields.

The wrong subrule is being applied

  • Cause: Multiple subrules either have no location group or overlap with the same scheduled location.

  • Fix:

    • Review the order of subrules — the first one that matches will be applied.

    • Assign clear location groups to prevent overlap.

Tip: Always assign subrules to location groups whenever possible. This ensures Mobaro applies the right subrule automatically.

Staff can’t submit a checklist

  • Cause: Required parameters were not completed.

  • Fix: In the Water Quality Question configuration, check which parameters are marked as required. Remind staff they must fill in all required values before submitting.

Validation warnings don’t appear

  • Cause: Minimum and maximum thresholds are missing or set incorrectly.

  • Fix: Edit the ruleset and make sure every parameter has both a minimum and maximum value.

Warning: All parameters are required to have thresholds, even if they are not required in the field.

Deleted ruleset still appears in checklists

  • Cause: The checklist still contains a Water Quality Question linked to the deleted ruleset.

  • Fix: Edit the checklist and remove or replace the Water Quality Question with a new ruleset.

Best practices for avoiding issues

  • Always double-check that every parameter in a ruleset has a min and max value.

  • Assign subrules to location groups to avoid overlap.

  • Review ruleset order if multiple subrules could apply.

  • Train staff on how validation warnings work so they know what to expect in the field.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I test rulesets before assigning them to live checklists?
A: Yes. Create a test checklist linked to a training location to confirm subrule assignment and validation.

Q: Do changes to a ruleset fix old results?
A: No. Edits only apply to new results going forward.
