Competency Overview widget

Read the Competency Overview matrix: what each cell color means, the Users and Competencies filters, who sees data, and where a cell takes you.

Written by Logan Bowlby

Overview

The Competency Overview widget is a matrix of Users and Competencies. Each row is a User, each column is a Competency, and each cell's color shows the User's Certification status for it right now.

Pick at least one User or User Group first: until you do, it says You must specify at least one user to get this overview. To add the widget to a dashboard, see How to set up Dashboard Templates.

At a glance

Who can do this

Anyone who can view the dashboard. Only Super Users and Users with Competencies › View see data in it.

Dashboards › a dashboard › Competency Overview widget (category Compliance in the widget list)

Availability

All organizations

💡 Why this matters: A single matrix tells you who is qualified for what, who is approaching renewal, and where coverage is thin, so you can plan training before a gap becomes an operational problem.

Competency Overview widget: a matrix of Users and Competencies with colored status cells

Read the matrix

Cell

Status shown when you hover

Green

Valid, never expires, or Valid, expires: and the date

Yellow

Due for renewal, expires: and the date. The renewal date has passed; the User still holds the Competency.

Red

Expired: and the date

Grey

None: the User has no Certification for it

If a User has several Certifications for one Competency, the cell uses the one that expires last; one that never expires wins. Users and Competencies are listed alphabetically. For how renewal and expiry dates are set, see Certification reporting and compliance dashboards.

Click a colored cell to open Competencies › Certifications, filtered to that User and Competency; for a red cell, expired Certifications are included. Mobaro first asks you to confirm leaving the dashboard: click Go to certifications. Grey cells can't be clicked.

Filter the widget

  • Users / User Groups (the Users button): required. Pick Users and User Groups; a User Group adds its members as rows.

  • Competencies: the columns to show. With nothing selected, every Competency in your organization is shown.

There's no time range or Location filter, so Bulk filtering and the Location Switcher don't change the widget. You can give it a custom title. It shows the status as of now: it reloads with the dashboard every 10 minutes and whenever you change a filter, and keeps no history. See How to use the Dashboard.

Who sees what

The widget shows data only to Super Users and Users with Competencies › View. Its rows are limited to the Users the viewer can see: Super Users and Users with Users › View see everyone; other Users see themselves and the members of User Groups they belong to, can delegate to or administrate.

⚠️ Heads-up: On a shared dashboard, a viewer without Competencies › View sees no data in the widget, and viewers with narrower User access see fewer rows. Check the dashboard with a viewer's account before relying on it.

Best practices

  • Scope each widget to one team's User Group and only the Competencies their work requires.

  • Review yellow cells weekly, so renewals happen before Certifications expire.

  • Give the widget a custom title that names the team, such as Coaster team — ride competencies.

  • Give each compliance dashboard an owner who acts on what it shows.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the competency matrix?

Add the Competency Overview widget, in the Compliance category, to a Dashboard Template, then pick Users or User Groups in its Users filter. See How to set up Dashboard Templates.

I set up competencies, but the widget shows nothing. Why?

Pick at least one User or User Group in the Users filter. If it's still empty, you need Super User or Competencies › View, and the Users must be ones you can see.

How do I export or print users and their competencies?

The widget has no export or print option. Pull Certifications through the Mobaro API instead — see Certification reporting and compliance dashboards.

Can each manager see only their own team?

Yes. Set the Users filter to the manager's User Group and save it as a Personal filter, or give the Dashboard Template one Organization filter per team. See Dashboard filters — Organization vs Personal.

Can I filter the matrix by location or ride?

No. The widget has no Location filter. Filter Users to the User Group that works at the Location, and Competencies to the ones that ride requires.
