Duration Question Type

Capture a length of time in a Checklist — hours and minutes — for readings like inspection duration or how long a task or hold lasted.

Written by Logan Bowlby

Overview

A Duration Question captures a length of time — hours and minutes — rather than a point in time. Use it for things like how long an inspection took, the length of a weather hold, or time spent on a task.

Users must be Super Users or have the following Role to add or edit Checklist questions:

  • Checklists: Modify or Create

Why this matters: Durations captured as free text ("about 40 min") can't be summed or trended. A Duration Question keeps the value structured, so you can report on how long tasks actually take and spot when something is running long.

Adding a Duration Question

1. Open the Checklist editor

Go to Checklists in the Mobaro Backend and open or create a Checklist.

2. Add the element

Click Add an element and choose Duration Question, then enter a Title and optional Explanatory Text.

Duration vs. Date & Time

A Duration captures how long something lasted (a length of time). A Date & Time question captures when something happened (a point on the calendar/clock). Use Duration for elapsed time and Date & Time for timestamps.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What format is captured?
A: A length of time in hours and minutes — not a calendar date or clock time.

Q: Should I use this for a start time?
A: No — a start time is a point in time, so use a Date & Time question. Use Duration only for elapsed time.

Q: Can a long duration trigger a follow-up?
A: Yes. Add a trigger with a condition on the duration (for example, longer than expected) to raise an Assignment or require a comment. See Adding triggers to a Checklist.
