Configuring measurement parameters (chlorine, pH, TDS, etc.)

The 13 Water Quality parameters a rule can check, how to set each one's minimum and maximum, and what happens to its limits when you untick it.

Written by Logan Bowlby

Overview

Water Quality parameters are the individual values (readings) you measure — Free Chlorine, pH, Turbidity (NTU) and so on. Inside each Rule of a ruleset you tick the parameters that rule checks and give each one a Minimum and a Maximum. Readings are validated against those limits.

This article covers the full parameter list, how to set limits, and what happens when you untick a parameter.

Who can do this

Super Users only. Other users may see the ruleset table and its buttons, but their changes aren't saved — they see an error such as The ruleset could not be created.

Backend (web). Readings are checked against the limits in the Mobile app.

🚀 Early access: Water Quality is an early-access feature and may not be enabled for your account. Contact Mobaro Support to request access. Until it's enabled, the ruleset table and the Water Quality Question element don't appear.

Set a parameter's limits

1. Open your ruleset

Go to Configuration and open the Checklists tab. The Water Quality ruleset table sits alongside the checklist category and folder tables (its title reads Checklist Water Quailty Ruleset). Select the ruleset and click the pencil icon (Edit Ruleset), or double-click the ruleset.

2. Open the rule

Each rule appears as a card. Click the rule's name (for example Deep Water Pools) to expand it.

3. Tick the parameter and enter its limits

Tick the parameter's checkbox. Minimum and Maximum fields appear — both are required. Limits can't be lower than 0, and the minimum must be lower than or equal to the maximum.

4. Save

Click Save. The button stays unavailable until you've made a change and every ticked parameter has valid limits.

ℹ️ Note: A reading exactly equal to the minimum or maximum counts as within range. Only readings below the minimum or above the maximum are flagged.

Untick a parameter

Unticking a parameter's checkbox takes it out of that rule. When you save the ruleset, Mobaro keeps only the ticked parameters. If you tick the parameter again later, its fields are empty. When you reopen a saved rule, the ticked parameters are listed first and the unticked ones after them.

🛑 Critical: The Minimum and Maximum of an unticked parameter are discarded when you save, and there's no way to get them back. Write down the limits of any parameter you might need again before you untick it.

Unticking a parameter in a rule doesn't remove it from your Checklists. The parameters staff record are chosen separately on each Water Quality Question. If a parameter is ticked on the question but not in the rule that applies, staff still enter the reading, but it isn't checked against any limits.

Available parameters

Every Water Quality rule offers the same 13 parameters. The unit column shows the unit the reading is recorded in.

ℹ️ Note: Mobaro checks each reading against the limits you enter — it doesn't supply, recommend or check the limits themselves. Take your values from the regulations that apply to your site and from your water-treatment specialists, and review them whenever those requirements change.

Best practices

  • Set limits from the regulations and guidance that apply to your site, and confirm them with whoever is responsible for water treatment.

  • Use separate rules where pools, spas or water features need different limits. See Best practices for structuring rulesets.

  • Keep a record of every limit outside Mobaro, so unticking a parameter never loses information you need.

  • Review limits regularly and whenever a requirement changes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to add a minimum and maximum to every measurement in the ruleset?

No — only the parameters you tick in a rule. Every ticked parameter needs both a minimum and a maximum. Leave a parameter unticked if the rule shouldn't check it.

Why won't the app accept a reading like ORP 212.7?

ORP takes whole numbers only. Each parameter has a fixed number of decimals, and the app rejects a reading with the wrong number, showing for example “Should have no more than 0 decimal(s)”. Round the reading to a whole number.

Can I set 2 decimals on a Water Quality parameter?

No. Decimals are fixed per parameter: Free, Combined and Total Chlorine and pH take exactly one decimal (enter 2.0, not 2); Turbidity (NTU) takes up to two; all other parameters take whole numbers.

What happens if staff enter a value outside the limits?

The reading is marked High or Low. If the Schedule has Require validation on rule deviation on, staff see a Deviations screen when they finish and can add an explanation. They can still finish; the Result is marked as requiring validation. See Understanding validation warnings and failures.

Does pH have a unit, and can I add my own parameters?

pH has no unit. The 13 parameters are fixed, so you can't add your own. To record another measurement, add a Number Question to the Checklist.
