Email Question type

Record an email address in a Checklist: how the format check works in the app and RideOps, logic limits, and where the answer appears.

Written by Logan Bowlby

Overview

An Email Question captures an email address that the User types, and checks that it looks like a valid address before the Checklist can be completed. Use it to record contact details, such as a contractor, a witness or a guest who reported an incident.

Mobaro doesn't send anything to the address: it's stored on the Result like any other answer. To email a Result to people, use a Result Report.

Who can do this

💡 Why this matters: A contact detail typed as plain text is easy to get wrong, and a wrong address is a dead end for any follow-up. The Email Question rejects anything that isn't shaped like an email address at the point of entry.

Add an Email Question

1. Open the Checklist editor

In the Mobaro Backend, go to Checklists and open or create a Checklist.

2. Add the question

Click Add an element and choose Email Question. Enter a Title (required, up to 1,000 characters) that says whose address to enter and, optionally, Explanatory Text.

3. Save

Click Accept Changes, then Save the Checklist.

Answering in the app

In the Mobaro app, the User types the address in the Enter an email address here field. While the text isn't a valid address, the app shows Sorry, this is an invalid email address and the question counts as unanswered.

The check is on the format only: some text, an @ and a domain, such as [email protected]. Mobaro doesn't check that the mailbox exists, so a typo in a real-looking address is accepted.

Every visible question must be answered, so the Checklist can't be completed until the Email Question has a valid address. There is no setting to make it optional. To ask for it only in some cases, hide it with logic: hidden questions don't need an answer.

RideOps supports Email Questions. Operators type the address in Enter email here. RideOps shows no error message: the question stays unanswered until the address is valid.

Logic and triggers

An Email Question can be shown or hidden by any logic condition. Other pages and elements can also depend on its answer, with equal to or not equal to an address of up to 75 characters. See Logic based on an answer to a question.

⚠️ Heads-up: Known issue in the mobile app: conditions on a Text Question or Email Question don't compare typed words correctly. equal to a word is never met, and not equal to is always met, whatever was typed. RideOps compares the text exactly. Until this is fixed, ask the question as a Select Question with fixed options and base the logic on those.

Email Questions don't support triggers. See Adding triggers to a checklist for the question types that do.

Email answers on Results

The address appears on the Result, in the Backend and in its PDF report. The Report Template setting Hide email addresses removes the email links from the performing User's and the Location's names on the front page; it doesn't hide Email Question answers. See Creating and using Report Templates.

Users with Results › Modify and Super Users can correct the answer on a completed Result. See Modify Checklist Results.

Best practices

  • Name the person in the Title, for example "Contractor's email address", so Users know whose address to enter.

  • Ask the person to read the address back, because Mobaro checks only the format.

  • Show the question with logic only when contact details are needed, for example when an incident involves a guest.

  • Don't use an Email Question to send notifications. Set up Result Reports and Notification Rules for that.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a question with no mandatory answer?

You can't make a visible Email Question optional: every visible question needs a valid address. To ask for it only sometimes, hide it with logic. Hidden questions don't need an answer. See Adding logic to a Checklist.

How do I create an element that requires an input field?

Pick the question type for the answer you need: an Email Question for an address, a Text Question for any typed text, or a Number Question for a number. Each must be answered when visible.

Can the checklist send an email automatically if something is missing?

Not to the address in an Email Question: Mobaro never emails that address. To email a Result, set up a Result Report. To stop a Checklist being completed without information, make sure the question is visible, so it must be answered.
