Creating a Timesheet Entry Type

Create, edit and delete Timesheet Entry Types — the categories users pick when logging time — and set the default Type.

Written by Logan Bowlby

Overview

Timesheet Entry Types classify logged time by the kind of work — for example Regular, Overtime, Travel or Training. Users pick a Type when they add a Timesheet entry, and the Type shows on the Timesheets page, in Result reports and in the Mobaro API, so you can tell the hours apart.

Entry Types are optional and organization-wide. This article covers creating, editing and deleting them. For logging time, see Create a Timesheet entry.

Works on

Backend (web) to set up. Users pick Types in the Mobile app and the Backend; the Public API lists them.

💡 Why this matters: Without Entry Types, all logged time is one bucket. With a short, clear set, "how much of this month's time was overtime or travel?" becomes a filter on the Timesheets page instead of a manual tally.

Create a Timesheet Entry Type

1. Open Time Registration

In the Mobaro Backend, go to Configuration and open the Time Registration tab.

2. Add the Type

Click + (Create). In the Timesheet Entry Type Editor, enter a Name. Tick Default if the Type should be preselected whenever someone adds an entry. Click Ok, and repeat for each Type you need.

How Entry Types work

Topic

What happens

Default

One Type at most. Ticking Default on a Type removes it from the previous default. The default is preselected in the app's Time entry and the Backend's entry dialog; people can change it.

None

In the app, users can pick None instead of a Type. In the Backend's entry dialog, Type is required whenever Types exist. With no Types, the field doesn't appear.

Timesheets page

Shows each entry's Type and has a Type filter. See Approving and rejecting Timesheet entries.

API

Entries return the Type as an ID. List Types with GET /api/customers/timesheets/types. The API can't filter entries by Type. See Reporting and exporting Timesheets.

Edit or delete a Type

Select a Type and click the pencil (Edit) to rename it or change Default, or double-click it. Renaming changes the name everywhere, including on existing entries.

To delete, select the Type, click the trash icon (Delete) and confirm. Mobaro doesn't check whether entries use the Type.

🛑 Critical: Deleting a Type can't be undone. Existing entries keep it — in the Backend it's shown struck through — but nobody can choose it for new entries or when editing, and the API marks it isDeleted. To change a Type's name, edit it instead of deleting and recreating it, or your reports will show two versions.

Best practices

  • Keep the list short and distinct, and agree with payroll or finance what each Type means before you create it.

  • Mark the most common Type as Default, so everyday logging needs no extra tap.

  • Rename rather than delete a Type that's already in use.

  • If you export with the API, map Type IDs to names with /api/customers/timesheets/types, since the entries only carry the ID.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I log my hours and my driving time?

On the Assignment you worked on — add a Timesheet entry to it in the app or the Backend. If your organization has a Type such as Travel, pick it for driving time. See Create a Timesheet entry.

Can I have more than one default Type?

No. Only one Type can be the Default. Ticking Default on another Type removes it from the current one.

What happens to entries if I delete a Type?

They keep it. The Backend shows it struck through, and it can't be chosen for new entries. Deleting can't be undone, so rename a Type instead if you only need a new name.

Can I export timesheets by Entry Type?

Not directly. The Timesheets page has no export, and the API can't filter by Type — export the period with the API and filter on the type ID yourself. See Reporting and exporting Timesheets.
