Overview
The Assignments by Category widget groups open Assignments in a donut chart. Select a segment to list the Assignments in that category.

What it shows
Only open Assignments are counted: status Created or Started. Finished and deleted Assignments are never counted.
There's no time range: the chart counts every Assignment that is open now. Use Deadline to narrow it.
Each slice is one category. Assignment Categories from Configuration and the Definition Categories of your Assignment Definitions get separate slices, even when they share a name. Assignments with no category make up the Uncategorized slice.
An Assignment with several categories counts once in each of them, so the slices can add up to more than your number of open Assignments.
Only Assignments you have access to are counted, so two people can see different numbers. See Why do I see different assignments on the Backend vs. the mobile app?.
The legend on the right lists the categories. Slice colors are fixed, and clicking a legend entry doesn't hide its slice.
Settings and filters
Use the buttons at the top of the widget. Filters combine, so an Assignment has to match all of them.

Reading the widget
Hover over a slice to see its category and count. Click a slice to list that category's open Assignments, using the widget's filters. The list shows Name, Assignee, Target, Asset, Creator, Deadline, From Checklist and Priority, with high-priority Assignments first, then by deadline. A deadline before today is shown in red. Click Go to assignment (the arrow at the end of a row) to open one.
If nothing matches the filters, the widget shows No data is available for this widget. Please try changing your filtering.
The widget reloads with the dashboard every 10 minutes and whenever you change a filter. Changes you make to its filters on a dashboard are kept only if you save them in a Personal filter — see Dashboard filters — Organization vs Personal. Best practices
Keep your category list short and set categories on assignment triggers, so the chart has few, meaningful slices. See Creating and managing Assignment Categories.
A large Uncategorized slice means Assignments are being created without a category — fix it at the source.
Give each team a copy filtered to its Locations, and set Deadline to Before Today in a second copy to show late work by category.
Pair it with the Assignments widget when you need the list itself.
Frequently asked questions
How do I update the assignment categories in the chart?
Assignment Categories are managed under Configuration › Assignments › Assignment Categories by Super Users or a Role with Organization › Administrate; Definition Categories are set in each Assignment Definition. The chart picks up changes on its next refresh. See Creating and managing Assignment Categories.
What's a good way to get assignments onto the dashboard?
Pick the widget for the question: the Assignments widget for a list, Assignments by Assignee for open work per person, this widget for open work per category, and Assignments in Period by Location for a period per Location.
Can I see finished assignments by category?
Not in this widget; it only counts open Assignments. Use Assignments in Period by Location with Status set to Finished, which stacks each Location's column by category.
Why don't the slices add up to my number of open assignments?
An Assignment with several categories counts in each of them. The widget also only counts Assignments that match its filters and that you have access to.
