How to create a Location Map

Upload a park map, place a marker for each Location and show it on a dashboard with the Location Map Overview widget, then read its colors.

Written by Logan Bowlby

Overview

A location map is your own park or site map with a marker for each Location. On a dashboard, the Location Map Overview widget shows each marker in the colors of the Location Overview: whether the Location is ready for operation and whether it is open, closed or down. Click a marker to see what is behind the color.

Setting it up takes three parts: upload the map, place the markers, then add the widget to a Dashboard Template. This article covers all three and how to read the finished map.

💡 Why this matters: A map turns a list of Location cards into a picture your team already knows. Supervisors and control rooms can spot a red or down ride by where it is in the park, not by scanning names.

Upload your map

Use an image of your park map in JPG, PNG or GIF format, up to 50 MB. Convert other formats, such as PDF, to an image first.

1. Open Location Maps

Go to Configuration and select the Location Maps tab.

2. Create the map

Click Create new location map (the + icon). Enter a Name, which is required, and upload the map image.

3. Save

Click OK. The map appears in the Location Maps list.

Add location markers

A marker links a spot on the map to one Location. Each Location can have one marker per map.

1. Open the marker editor

In Location Maps, select the map and click Edit location map markers, or double-click the map in the list. The Location map markers editor opens.

2. Place a marker

Double-click the spot on the map where the Location is. In Location associated to the marker, choose the Location under Select a location and click OK. Repeat for each Location. If the Location already has a marker on this map, Mobaro says There is already an existing marker with that location.

3. Adjust markers

Drag a marker to move it. To remove one, select it in the list on the left, click the delete (trash) icon and confirm with Yes.

4. Save the markers

Click the Save icon at the top of the editor. Closing without saving discards your changes.

Add the map to a dashboard

The map appears only through the Location Map Overview widget on a Dashboard Template. You need Super User access or a Role with Dashboard Templates › Manage. For building templates, see How to set up Dashboard Templates.

1. Add the widget

Open the Dashboard Template, click Add a widget on a row and choose Location Map Overview.

2. Choose the map

Click Maps in the widget and select your location map. Set the widget's other filters (Locations or groups, Checklists, Schedules and time range) as needed.

3. Save the filter and template

Select or create a filter, then click Save. Widget settings are only kept inside a filter.

Read the map

Each marker has two colors, taken from the same data as the Location Overview widget:

Part of the marker

Colors

Outer ring: readiness

Green when the Location is ready for operation; red when it isn't. See Configuring readiness colors on the Location Overview.

Center: operational status

Green (open), gray (closed), yellow (non-blocking Downtime) or red (Blocking Downtime). Locations without Operational Logging show the readiness color.

Click a marker to open the Location overview for that Location. Use the Show operational data in drilldown button to switch the drilldown to operational data, and Configuration to set the readiness rules the widget uses. A red marker you can't explain? See Troubleshooting red statuses on the Location Overview.

⚠️ Heads-up: A marker only shows when its Location is in the widget's filter and the viewer can see that Location. People who aren't members of a Location won't see its marker. Check the dashboard with a viewer's account before you put it on a control-room screen.

Rename or delete a map

To rename a map, select it and click Edit location map. The editor doesn't let you replace the uploaded image: to use a new version of your park map, create a new location map, add its markers and point the widget at it.

To delete a map, select it, click Delete location map and confirm with Yes. Widgets that used it then show The selected map does not exist until you choose another map.

Best practices

  • Use a clean, high-contrast map image cropped to the operating area, so markers stay readable when the widget is small.

  • Add markers for every Location the widget's filter includes, so no ride is missing from the picture.

  • Build a separate map per park or zone for large sites rather than one crowded map.

  • When you add or delete Locations, update the map's markers too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add locations to my map?

Go to Configuration › Location Maps, select the map and click Edit location map markers. Double-click the spot, choose the Location in Location associated to the marker, click OK, then click the Save icon.

Where do I find my location map?

Maps are managed under Configuration › Location Maps, which needs Organization › Administrate. To view one, open a dashboard that has the Location Map Overview widget. If there isn't one, ask someone with Dashboard Templates › Manage to add it.

What file types and size can I upload for a map?

JPG, PNG or GIF images up to 50 MB. Convert a PDF or other format to an image first.

I selected a map in the widget and saved, but it disappeared. Why?

Widget settings are only saved inside a filter. Select or create a filter in the Dashboard Template, choose the map again, then save. See How to set up Dashboard Templates.

Can I show the map on a TV without logging in?

No. Dashboards need a signed-in user. Sign in on the screen with an account that can see the Locations, open the dashboard and use Toggle Fullscreen Mode. See How to use the Dashboard.
