Understanding Checklist scoring

Which Questions can score, how Mobaro calculates a Result's percentage, how to leave Questions out with N/A, and where scores appear.

Written by Logan Bowlby

Overview

Scoring turns a completed Checklist into a percentage. You give points to answers, and Mobaro works out a score for each Result from the points collected, so you can compare quality and compliance across Locations and over time.

This article explains which Questions can score, how the percentage is calculated, and how to leave Questions out of it.

💡 Why this matters: A consistent scoring scheme makes Results comparable — you can spot a slipping Location or a recurring failure at a glance instead of reading every report.

🛑 Critical: A score isn't a measure of completion. It rates the quality of a finished Result, and a low score on its own doesn't make a Location Not ready for operation. Use criticality for readiness — see Understanding criticality settings with schedules.

Which Questions can score

Question type

How you give points

Select Question and Select Question Group

A Points value on each option

Smiley Question

A Points value on each face, for 2, 3, 4, 5 or 11 (NPS) smileys — see Smiley Question Type

Number, Slider and Temperature Questions

Score Intervals: ranges with From, To and Points. The first matching interval scores; From and To are inclusive.

Other Question types, such as text, photo or signature Questions, never score. They collect information without affecting the percentage.

How the score is calculated

  • Each answered Question that earns points adds them to the Result's total.

  • Its maximum is the highest points it could earn: the best option, face or interval. For a Multiple choice Select Question, the maximum is the points of all its options added together.

  • The score is the points collected divided by the maximum possible, as a percentage.

  • 0 is a value: an answer worth 0 points still counts toward the maximum.

For example, if a User answers "OK" (1 point) to 9 of 10 Questions and "Not OK" (0 points) to the last, they collect 9 of 10 possible points — a score of 90%. A Result in which no answer carries points has no score.

⚠️ Heads-up: On a Multiple choice Select Question, every ticked option adds its points, and the maximum assumes all options are ticked. A User can only reach 100% on it by ticking every option that has points. For pass/fail checks, use Single choice.

Leave a Question out of the score

A Question only counts when the answer carries points. Leave it out — neither points nor maximum — when:

  • The chosen Select option has an empty Points field. Add an "N/A" option with empty points for checks that may not apply.

  • A Smiley Question is answered N/A. Tick Allow N/A answer on the Question and set the N/A answer text.

  • A Number, Slider or Temperature answer falls outside every Score Interval.

  • The Question isn't answered.

Equal or weighted scoring

  • Equally important Questions: give every Question the same points for a pass (OK = 1) and for a fail (Not OK = 0).

  • Weighted Questions: give more important Questions higher points, such as 5 or 10, while others stay at 1. Use weighting deliberately; overuse makes scores hard to read.

  • Rating scales: give each option or smiley different points to rate from very good to very poor.

Where scores show up

  • The Result report: the overall score, and a score per Page.

  • Results: filter by Score, Greater than or Less than a value. Results with no score don't appear in a Score filter. See Viewing Checklist Results.

  • Dashboards: score widgets such as the Average Score Widget.

  • Compliance: Require maximum score sends any Result below 100% to Awaiting Validation — see Schedule compliance settings.

  • Result Reports: a notification can be sent only when the overall score is below maximum — see How to set up a Result Report.

🛑 Critical: If you modify a submitted Result, the scores for its Questions, Pages and the Result are recalculated — but its logic isn't re-run and no Assignments are created.

Example: a weighted safety check

Scenario: on a ride inspection, a few safety-critical checks should count far more than cosmetic ones.

Setup: safety-critical Questions score 10 for a pass and 0 for a fail. Cosmetic Questions score 1 for a pass, with an "N/A" option with empty points where a check may not apply.

Result: a single safety failure drops the score sharply, so at-risk Results stand out on the Dashboard, while skipped cosmetic checks don't distort the percentage.

Best practices

  • Decide on a scoring scheme before building Checklists, and use it across Checklists you want to compare.

  • Give every option on a scored Question a value — 0 for a fail — and leave points empty only for answers that shouldn't count.

  • Use Single choice for pass/fail Questions.

  • Cover the whole expected range with Score Intervals, so readings don't silently drop out of the score.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a score to a checklist so it shows in Results?

Give points to the answers: Points on Select and Smiley options, or Score Intervals on Number, Slider and Temperature Questions. New Results then get a score. A Result whose answers carry no points has none.

Can Mobaro alert someone or act automatically when a checklist scores low?

Partly. A Result Report can email only when the overall score is below maximum, and Require maximum score sends those Results to Awaiting Validation. There's no custom score threshold, and Mobaro doesn't invalidate low-scoring Results.

Will a location turn red on the dashboard if a checklist scores less than 100%?

Not because of the score itself: readiness depends on whether critical Checklists are completed. Exception: if the Schedule uses Require maximum score and Color is only affected by approved results is ticked, a Result below 100% keeps the Location red until it's approved. See Understanding criticality settings with schedules.

If a checklist isn't started, does it count as 0%?

No. A Checklist that isn't completed has no answers, so there's no score to count. The Performance by Locations and Groups widget has an Include unanswered checklists as 0% in score option if you want them to count.

My question allows more than one answer. How do the points work?

On a Multiple choice Select Question, the points of every ticked option are added up, and the maximum is the total of all options. Use Single choice if only one answer should count.

If I approve a result, will its score go back to 100%?

No. Approving doesn't change answers or the score. The score only changes when you edit an answer — see Modify Checklist Results.
